Snow Does A GateKeeper Good

This photo was just a bit too pretty not to share... GateKeeper looks stunning set among the snow covered ground at Cedar Point.

And check out that air-time hill!  Looking pretty good, as expected the ride is turning into one heck of a visual feast.  Next up in the ride's construction is a large flat spin, then it is on to the front gate heartlines and keyhole elements.

You can keep up to date with the ride's progress via several webcams the park has up.

Cyclone Evan & a Cold Day in Newtown

To contact us Click HERE

Low pressure reigns across the nation today as gray skies and sad hearts tend to keep us preoccupied with the news from Newtown vs the weather.

I'm sure some big weather story will come along and blow some of the coverage it's way, but we as a nation seem to be in a week of mourning over the loss of so many young lives and brave teachers. We also seem to be focusing on the problems of dealing with mental health problems in this nation as the killer was not a well young man.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-20755855

Far away in the Fiji Islands the name Evan not Sandy is on the minds of the people there as a Category 4 hurricane battered that beautiful island nation with sustained winds in excess of 185 mph.

It's far away and on the other side of the world and we are preoccupied with our side of the world, but weather goes on whether you watch it or not.

The weather in Newton today is cold and gray and dreary with the threat of cold rain as the first of the children are buried today. Jewish Law dictates funerals as soon as possible and so Noah Pozner is being buried today. It's hard for a family who does everything right and tries to move their children to a better place with a better school and less crime still cannot hide from a random act of violence.

We try to do the best for our children and as I have often joked to my friends that "control is an illusion" and when asked how I raised my kids, many as a single divorced mother, I would say seriously "I gave up the illusion of control" because that is what it is...an illusion.

We try to do our best. We try to show them love. We try and protect them. We worry over their crossing the street when young, taking baths by themselves, doing their homework, their choice of friends and we move from childhood fears to how fast they drive and whether or not they take us seriously when we talk about safe sex and drugs and anything else that comes along to keep us awake at night when they are out at a party somewhere.

We can't be everywhere and even then being by their side is not enough.

There is a fund set up for Noah whose Hebrew name was Shmuel...  and a good site online for more info. I hope all of the information is correct as there have been a lot of nonsense by fake people online playing sick games regarding this tragedy.

http://www.mommasgonecity.com/2012/12/mobilizing-the-pain-how-to-help-noah-pozners-family/

You have to wonder... how they felt moving there..dealing with the power outages of Sandy and now this tragedy... if they made the wrong decision or if they are going to stay there and go on.

How do any of them go on? With faith, with love and help from family and friends.

Cold Weather Makes a Comeback

Nice image above...shows where the snow and rain is ...however the picture below shows where the frontal boundary is and where the temperature divide is...

A picture you could understand from up somewhere in the Space Station without a map key...
Winter is slicing it's way down across the US and making it's way down the Florida Peninsular.
The wind shifted last night while I was in Best Buy. No not buying anything :( just paying the bill :( and came outside and whoosh the wind was in my face and my sweater that was tied around my waist was suddenly being put on the way it was meant to be worn. Wow... did it get windy fast.
And, cold air is filtering down, down... across the South.  This blast is more a West Coast front than a strongly Canadian front which is also on it's way down the road.
And, snow is on the way in Ames, Iowa and not just one snowfall but two in the next ten days.

When snow is on the way twice in ten days you can say winter will make it's appearance with a certainty that the Mayan Calendar cannot be prove and there is no way the world is going to end before I see snow if I have anything to do with it...........

December 25th, 26th and 27th... snow showers fall on Iowa.
Even here in Raleigh there is a bit of a hint of a colder forecast than the NWS wants to go with as they have put the possibility of snow in the forecast for December 26th yet they have the temperature in the 43 to 49 degree range.........  I doubt that is a mistake as much as a window of uncertainty that exists between the two model players that are forecasting this storm differently (big surprise) and we are watching the GFS and we are watching the European closely down the road.

Down the short road "DRACO" makes his appearance onto the scene as TWC has taken a stand and pronounced this a snow making storm worthy enough of a name... of Fame...
I'd rather talk about weather storms that go down in history than mass murderers.. again I love weather for a reason.. and yet weather does kill... and yet... again you get a forecast, a heads up...
Am giving y'all a heads up... Draco is on the weather board at TWC...

Enjoy the song below... from a time before there were school mass shootings... although there were some mass shootings they were not the kind we think of when we say Columbine or Virginia Tech or Newtown.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nqMmquNLnHg <--- happy="happy" p="p" song...="song...">
Perhaps TWC should have called that other storm Bruno not Brutus.. just saying..

Ps...
It's a cold rainy day in Newtown for today's burials.

Wasting Time on the Web - Catalina Island Earthquake

To contact us Click HERE

Time You Enjoy Wasting is Not Wasted Time . . .

One of the things I do during the off season is check the Earthquake Map. Not, because I am worried on the end of the world in two days... but because I am tropically bored and mildly curious. Someone, somewhere over the last several days online mentioned a big earthquake any day in the South California area being "due" because of plate movements along other corresponding fault lines. Seems there was one the other day, I was of course watching coverage of the horrific Newtown massacre and missed the big quake that did happen on 12/14/2012 and it was rated at 6.3 on the Richter Scale. A spate of smaller quakes on Catalina and across South California occurred over the next few days as we watched a disaster of the non-geological kind. I'd like to give whoever predicted it credit, but to be honest with all the Tweets I read and articles I study and message boards I look over on weather that often careen out of control in the direction of geology... I get lost a lot. It's a good lost. I'm a believer in the old adage "time enjoy wasting is not wasted time" which has been attributed to a lot of people including John Lennon. Waste some time and read up on the saying in the Ps region of this blog.

And, sometimes it's good to waste time on Pinterest or reading up on geology to distract the mind from disasters that are harder to comprehend than the geological and meteorological time. Sort of like staring at the water vapor loop after staring too long at CNN or Fox.

So as I said I looked at today's map and whoah...there was that earthquake a few days back offshore in Southern California. Going in closer I saw lots of bulls eye circles hovering over Catalina Island. As I have lived in LA and know the area well anything in that area draws me in more so than say Vanuatu.  I also noticed a lot of continued activity in the general region of Central America which is interesting. I mean if there was a 8.0 earthquake in the land of the Maya.. would that not be their end of the world? We are all so ethnocentric by nature. When my youngest son was on vacation in Panama I checked the earthquake ticker often, now that he is back in Miami I'm less worried on South America breaking off from North America at the Panama Canal and drifting south towards Antarctica. Okay..I admit I really didn't worry on that as much as other things, but I did stare at the isthmus of Panama and pondered how that happened and why it's so narrow and it really does look on a map as if it is holding on desperately to South America who wanted to jump at some point but Panama held on tight.

http://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/Earthquake-183480501.html

Avalon... conjures up so many visions to people who have lived in Southern California..

Then again lots of people are a bit jumpy when they hear of any problem on Planet Earth right now. Let's call it the Mayan Question. People are thinking on it, laughing at it, and wishing we could just get the date past us and move on to where it's in the rear view mirror.

A look into Planet Earth with an eye towards understanding Global Time as I call it.

"The Islands as Part of the Transverse Ranges
Most of the mountain ranges of California trend north-south, but the Transverse Ranges, including the Santa Monica Mountains and their extension into the ocean, the northern Channel Islands, trend east-west. Geologists believe that, 20 million years ago, the platform on which the islands are located was oriented north-south along the coast, with San Miguel lying just offshore of San Diego. Forces resulting from relative movements of the Pacific and North American plates have caused the western Transverse Ranges to rotate clockwise to their present position. It is as if one sliver of the continent – the Transverse Ranges –got caught up in the shear between the plates. It rotated ‘much like a floating plank that has one end snagged on the river bank, while the other end is dragged along by the current’. Evidence for this rotation is found, in part, by magnetism in the rocks of the islands. When the rocks of the northern Channel islands were formed, magnetic particles in the rocks would have been in line with the magnetic poles of the Earth. Measurements now taken in the rocks of the northern Channel Islands show that the magnetic particles differing by about 100 degrees from a polar orientation, with the oldest rocks showing the greatest variance. This suggests that the islands have rotated clockwise about 100 degrees since the formation of the rocks.East of the rotating block, a gap opened, creating the space now partially occupied by the Los Angeles basin. The space was filled from below by igneous rocks and the uplift and unroofing of mid-crustal metamorphic rocks like the Catalina schist."The point is earth time is long term, not short term. So, if you live in the LA region know that the Channel Islands are part of the Santa Monica range that reigns above LA with the Hollywood Hills being the foothills and the setting for the ever famous Hollywood Sign. That sign hovered to the north of where I worked on Wilshire Blvd and was often framed in snow in the winter when snow fell on the high peaks of San Gabriel Mountains. The LA region is really a visual feast in real time for any geology nut.  Yeah, I said that :)

Anyone who doesn't believe me watch this video as someone hikes up to Sandstone Peak. There's mountains and chaparral and on a clear day you can see Catalina Island and the other Channel Islands. A half an hour straight up from the city and you are far, far away from the traffic on the Santa Monica Freeway.

What a beautiful shot...taken from the video, please watch it to appreciate our local California Mtns.
A nice video on youtube that shows you around Catalina is below... you'd think it was a location shoot for Burn Notice... not just off the coast of LA and San Diego and my old home town Long Beach!

There it is... 26 miles across the sea... the island of romance...

Find some romance... be in Key West or Laguna or Catalina Island :)

And, if you want to stay on land..go to Laguna Beach...

watch the sun set down over the Channel Islands :)
Trust me.. more fun than reading doom and gloom on the end of the world... vs the end to a beautiful day...

And, if you can't get away and take a vacation. Take a ride on the electronic web and do some weather and island surfing and listen to a Youtube video and smile. Lord knows we can all use to listen to some good music and smile a bit these days.
Sweet Tropical Dreams,
BobbiStorm
Ps.... now I feel sooo much better. Going to take a long, hot shower and sing that song as best as I can and I'll be back with more info on DRACO later in the day.  Weather delays and snow days moving east from Denver to Chicago and possibly the East Coast and for sure the WV and PA part of the Appalachian Trail.

Say Goodbye to 2012... Hello to 2013

To contact us Click HERE

Say goodbye to memories of Hurricane Sandy and Sandy Hook Massacre... that as much as we love to read the Farmers Almanac it never told us that the name Sandy would hover over our world for months like a bad nightmare for the last half of the year.

Did anyone see that coming when they looked at the list of names for the 2012 Atlantic Hurricane Season? Doubt it...

I remember thinking Andrew was a stupid name for a storm in 1992...

So, this post is a post where I remember the year and say goodbye to so many memories.

We said goodbye to people as diverse as Whitney Houston and Andy Griffith..  songwriters and comedians, journalists and sportsman.

Singers who made a difference in my early life... like Davy Jones from the Monkees ... Etta James and Andy Williams.

One of my all time favorite songs is Moon River..

Faces from my childhood, my teens, the LA days like Donna Summers and political days like George McGovern and Neil Armstrong who looked back at earth and saw weather from the moon.

2012 was a cold season in hell for Europe..one of the worst winters in recent history. Global WARMING took a vacation last winter in Europe and Russia.

Venice was partially submerged by floods and tourists made do the best they could... as the visual images of Venice made many of us stare and wonder if we will ever get to see Venice before it sinks ...  I'm hoping to see it one day...

People got married and babies were born in my personal world... and we traveled nonstop it seems for months.

I watched hurricanes on computer monitors from the Outer Banks to Florida and back...

Drove through a tropical storm or two in Georgia on I-95 and danced in the moonlight in February on the banks of the Biscayne Bay in tropical splendor.

Despite the drought in Texas and the drama of Sandy in NY, NJ and the other places that felt her wrath... 2012 is going out rather quietly in our part of the world. Cold nights, clear skies and I just watched the last sunset of 2012 out the bedroom window.

I played less on message boards and danced on Twitter more ... became an avid follower of Mike's Spaghetti Models page online and on Facebook... and enjoyed being a part of something bigger than just myself and my blog. I used Weather Apps and even played with Pinterest and Instagram.

This has been a year of change...of trying new things and learning as much as I can and trying to share what I have learned with others. I've forecast storms on Facebook Pages with others and drove through Beryl in driving rain on a windy night in May.

http://hurricaneharbor.blogspot.com/2012_05_01_archive.html

I spent a lot of time on I-95 this year...

I-95 South Carolina Map

A wild ride... different than staking out a storm on the beach...

And, I am looking forward to 2013 and whatever the new year brings.

I want snow..............badly.

I can't wait to see what the hurricane season will look like............

There's a set of comets about to grace our skies later this year...

http://www.space.com/17762-newfound-comet-dazzling-2013-display-c2012s1.html

Here's a video (not responsible for the views of the youtuber ;) but enjoy)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bw6MsuGy5ok  WATCH ;) if you want to learn more..

This comet has the potential to be bigger than the full moon and .... to light up the sky during the daytime the way the comet of 1680 did....

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Comet_of_1680

And... most of all we survived the Mayan End of the World Calendar Fiasco...

I imagine we can take anything that 2013 throws at us ;)

At least we won't have to hear about all the disasters that will befall us when the calendar runs out..

Which reminds me I need to find a good weekly desk calendar as I am going to really try and organize myself this year ;)

Thank you for making this year a massive, big year for my blog and stick around and let's see what trouble we can get into next year...

Australia's Dreamworld has opened their new themed area in time for their Summer season (how I miss Summer already), themed around Dreamwork's Kung Fu Panda.  In fact, the area is officially called Kung Fu Panda: Land of Awesomeness.  It is part of the park's Dreamworks Experience, which consists of several mini-lands with other themes such as Shrek and Madagascar.

The new area features a couple rides, one of which is a renovated bumper car attraction titled Skadoosh.

© Dreamworld
The other new ride is much bigger and gives quite a thrill: a Zamperla Air Race named Pandamonium.  The ride has some neat theming, including cars that look like rickshaws from the side, and the front seats have nothing in front of them at all giving a wide open feeling of freedom.  According to this report from Parkz, the park is currently operating the ride in two modes, one where the cars invert and one where they do not.  The queue is divided, letting riders pick their intensity and the ride runs alternating cycles.  Not surprisingly, it sounds like the fully inverting cycle is far more popular!

Knott's Busy Creating a New Boardwalk

With an entire newly re-themed Boardwalk area to be created, Knott's Berry Farm has been wasting no time in starting the heavy construction work.

The biggest part of the expansion - the extended wild mouse coaster named Coast Rider - has seen the most work done so far.  Footers for the ride are well underway, showing off how the ride will sit in its given area.  It will utilize most of the space that Perilous Plunge used for the lift, turn around, and drop - it's actually amazing how nicely the coaster will fit in that exact area.

The former water ride's large lagoon will be used for the expansion's other two new attractions, the Surfside Glider Flying Scooters and the Pacific Scrambler.  Those two rides aren't quite as far along, but with the new year around the corner I have a feeling work will pick up.

More photos of the construction of Coast Rider can be seen in this recent update from Westcoaster.

Universal Studios Hollywood may not have started much work on their new Wizarding World of Harry Potter, but Universal Studios Japan sure hasn't been waiting around!

Over on the Theme Park Construction Board (which you should check out if you haven't, lots of great stuff gets posted there) some new photos of the gigantic show building for - I assume - Hogwart's castle has been built already.

Sure, it helps that Japan's Wizarding World will take up residence in a former parking lot meaning almost no ground work other than concrete removal was needed before foundations could go in.  Hollywood, however, has some massive land projects needed before Harry can move in.

Check out the photos of the new show building going up at this link.

NPN's Look Back at 2012

To contact us Click HERE

In last year's look back at 2011 I wrote how there was so much to look forward in 2012, so much in fact that it made it pretty easy to say goodbye to '11.  Now that that exciting year will come to an end at the stroke of midnight tonight, I thought we could take a look back at it. A full year for the theme park industry to say the least, we'll just be looking at some of the highlights from each month.  Time warp - let's go!

Technically Legoland Florida opened in 2011, but I'd be remiss if I did not make mention of its spectacular performance in 2012.  Between their first full year of operation, and the reopening of the water park, and the announcement of more new stuff - things appear to have gone quite well for the park.  Scott & Carol posted their coverage of the property in January, introducing our readers to the park in detail.  The month also marked the first day of work for Matt Ouimet as Cedar Fair's CEO - a seemingly small thing that will speak volumes over the next few years.

I'm sorry February, but you're a cold and ugly month.  Still, some things that happened during this month in 2012 had ride fans drooling on their keyboards.  Both Shambhala at PortAventura and Leviathan at Canada's Wonderland reached construction milestones, the former reached its high point and the latter completed its track.  A bright spot appeared on the future of Kentucky Kingdom when it was announced that the Koch family planned to reopen it as Bluegrass Boardwalk.  The plans fell through later in the year, but it was quite a development at the time.

It was still quite early in the year, but March brought the first round of new ride openings.  Scott and Carol were at Dollywood to cover the opening of Wild Eagle, the park's anticipated wing coaster from B&M.  Across the pond, two other large rides opened to passengers for the first time as well:  the stellar looking Wodan at Europa Park and The Swarm, another B&M wing coaster, at Thorpe Park.

Busy, busy, busy - lots of ride openings were the focus in April here on NPN, with a busy schedule of covering them all.  Everyone was waiting to see how Busch Gardens Williamsburg's Verbolten turned out, and Scott and Carol were there to tell us when the ride opened.  Later in the month they headed up North to take a spin on B&M's tallest coaster - ever - which also happens to be over 300 feet tall.  Leviathan at Canada's Wonderland is a monster both literally and figuratively, as the duo reported.  Later in the month I checked out Dorney Park's pair of new offerings, Stinger and Dinosaurs Alive!

Who doesn't love a good surprise?  May started out with one from Cedar Point, that Wildcat would be removed in favor of additional seating for Luminosity.  It's amazing looking back at just how many ride openings Scott & Carol hit this year, as May also saw X-Flight's premier at Six Flags Great America.  It is not often that we write about a whole new park opening in the U.S., but that's exactly what we were able to do when Galveston Pleasure Pier opened in May.  The seaside amusement park in Texas combines classic rides with modern thrills.

One coaster was really the talk of the town in 2012, and we finally got to check out Skyrush at Hersheypark in June.  For any fan of intense rides, Skyrush provides some of the most extreme ejector airtime I've felt.  The Summer also really picked up with new attractions opening on the West coast, and Kevin was there to share the developments with us.  Two big theme parks offered two big new attractions: the entire new Cars Land at Disney California Adventure, and Transformers at Universal Studios Hollywood.  The next big opening was Superman: Ultimate Flight at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom, a unique launched coaster that sits on a small space but packs a big punch.

In between celebrating the country's birthday, NPN also was at the celebration of Six Flags Over Georgia's 45th anniversary in July.  The Summer also marked the 20th anniversary of Dorney Park's ownership by Cedar Fair, which I covered in some seriously lengthy detail for you all.  The (warm) winds of change started to blow as well, with the news that Fiesta Texas' Rattler, Disaster Transport and Space Spiral at Cedar Point, and Kings Island's Son of Beast would be turned to dust.  I set off on one of my coaster-seeking road trips, and documented my trip via several updates.

August was a rather big month for announcing things, both what is coming this year and also what won't be around any more.  Additional items that would be retired included Flashback and the Texas Chute Out at Six Flags Over Texas, and Perilous Plunge at Knott's Berry Farm.  Those may have been bummers, but they were quickly overshadowed by some mega-announcements.  Cedar Point unveiled GateKeeper, Silver Dollar City took the wraps off of Outlaw Run, California's Great America gave the details of Gold Striker, and Six Flags revealed more new stuff than you can shake a stick at for all their parks.

Don't tell the parks that Halloween actually takes place in October, not September.  While it was a little early, NPN was out covering several Halloween events in September, including the Haunt at Worlds of Fun and Fright Fest at Six Flags Great Adventure.  We also launched a new series on NPN, the Vault, showcasing some of the older stuff we have laying around.  New announcements continued during September as well, including news from Kings Dominion, Wild Adventures, and Darien Lake.

The screams of the recently departed continued into October, with plenty more in-park coverage of hauntings across the country.  Scott & Carol got into the swing of things with the Haunt at Kings Island, the Phantom Fright Nights at Kennywood, and Six Flags Great America's Fright Fest.  All those scares, I'm glad they survived! Dorney Park celebrated their fifth anniversary of Haunt with another year of screams.  Everyone got a bit of a wicked treat when they got to check out the deconstruction of Son of Beast, for it is not every day we get to see a ride of this size come down.

The month of November is a big one for our industry, that's when the annual IAAPA trade show takes place.  A series of updates from Scott and Carol kept us in the loop on all the news.  Some of the special announcements included the unveiling of Outlaw Run's cars, and the addition of an inversion on Mt. Olympus' Hades.  Several other updates included plenty of hidden gems that all show off the latest and greatest the amusement industry has to offer.  And as if all that wasn't enough, a brand new water park, Aquatica San Diego, was announced!

Finally, the current month we are saying farewell to, December.  One of the largest news items so far has been the opening of New Fantasyland at the Magic Kingdom in Disney World.  Filled with new rides, shows, and restaurants, the new area has created quite a buzz for its level of theming and attention to detail.  It is also fitting that as the year rolls to an end we take a look at what 2013 has in store with stories like an update of the well underway GateKeeper at Cedar Point and a brand new addition to Miniland at Legoland Florida.

So that's 2012 according to NewsPlusNotes, at least a condensed version of the 558 posts that were written this year.  Thanks to all our readers for stopping by, we certainly look forward to checking out all that 2013 has to offer with you guys!  Happy New Year!

Kings Island 2013 - More Dinos?

Kings Island's Dinosaurs Alive! From Above
I happened to notice that along with "new live shows, new menu items, and a series of special events," Kings Island is also expanding their Dinosaurs Alive! attraction in 2013.  No details have been released yet on exactly how it will expand, but the park's website does point out that the exhibit will be "even bigger" next season.

Alright, so it is not the most exciting news, but quite interesting to me nonetheless.  I've been wondering how Cedar Fair will keep guests interested in the Dinosaurs Alive! exhibits as the years pass, and I guess this is a part of that answer.  It could just be as simple as the addition of a new dinosaur, or a literal expansion of the trail into a new area with additional scenes - we will have to wait to find out.

The Dinosaurs Alive! exhibit will enter its third season in 2013 at Kings Island, so perhaps additions to these attractions will take place in their junior year for the attractions at all the company's parks.  It makes sense that something will have to be added in order to keep guests paying the extra fee to enter.  I wonder if whatever expansion they have planned will be enough?  I'd love to know what the expected shelf life of the exhibits are, I suppose we could assume quite a few years more considering the planned addition to the original.

What do you guys think?  Leave a comment!

The gifts just keep on coming!  Though the main event of the season is now over, there's still plenty of new-coaster updates to keep us hanging on, right?

Above is one of several panoramic photos that Six Flags Fiesta Texas shared just before the holiday.  It is of the section of track that runs on the top of the cliff midway through the ride's course.  You can see some of the extreme banking that is used as the train turns on its side, then rights itself, only to do it again!  And that little bunny hill at the end looks like it could be pretty wicked.

The park has the ride's new track on the top of the lift hill and start of the drop, but the area after that is still underway.  This one just gets better and better with each update!

© Cedar Point
Even with plenty of snow and the holiday, things haven't totally slowed on the progress of Cedar Point's GateKeeper, either.  Pointbuzz is featuring some new shots of the ride's recently added air-time hill, which is half completed.  The element will be directly after the inversion seen above, and many are hoping that it might give a more than usual amount of air on a B&M.

The new photos also show the massive footers going in for the keyhole elements that will stand directly over the park's entrance.  That's going to be one impressive front gate when all is said and done.
